New gasket key to Shieldhall success

Construction of Scottish Water’s recently completed Shieldhall tunnel in Glasgow led to development of an innovative new tunnel segment sealing gasket.

The new design from VIP-Polymers was designed to meet the design specification and reduce the risk of segment cracking.

The 4.7m diameter, 5km long tunnel was completed in the autumn and main contracting joint venture Costain Vinci has now confirmed that the gaskets performed well.

“Overall, the VIP gaskets contributed to an exceptionally well-built tunnel, with no reported segment cracking arising from high corner contact pressure, or segment ram loading transfer, cracks or leakage, meeting the tunnel lining specification without compromise,” said Costain tunnel lining supply manager Sam Simons.

The cast in tunnel segment gaskets feature compressible corners to deliver consistent load performance along the entire perimeter of the gasket. According to VIP, conventional shot joined tunnel segment gaskets increase the risk of corner point loading and cracking.
