Nicholson secures Californian dam anchoring deal

Safety of a dam in California is set to be secured following award of an anchoring contract to Nicholson Construction from main contracting joint venture FDS, formed by Flatiron, Dragados and Sukut.

The work on the Lake Isabella Dam will address concerns regarding overtopping, seismic and seepage on the 66 year old structure as part of FDS’ safety modification project.

The main project will enhance the structural capability of the existing dam and increase public safety, as well as restore water storage capacity in Lake Isabella by raising both the main dam and auxiliary dam by 5m.

Nicholson’s work entails the installation of 535 emergency spillway pattern rock anchors, 100 spot bolt rock anchors, 80 pattern and spot drains, and 828 labyrinth weir foundation slab anchors.

Nicholson has said that the work is expected to be completed by January 2020.
