Nicholson Construction has been named the design and build contractor for the Prairie du Sac Dam remediation project in Wisconsin, US.
The dam has operated on the Wisconsin River for the last 105 years, but the tail waters have decreased significantly, exposing the original wooden timbers and making them susceptible to deterioration.
Nicholson was awarded the full contract for the remediation work, after successfully completing the design phase and test programme, which will include micropiles drilled through the dam.
The scope of work includes the installation of approximately 1,000 micropiles, 250 threaded bar pier anchors, 974m³ of excavation within the gallery and construction of a 425m concrete transfer beam.
Nicholson vice president for central region Dan Thome said: “Nicholson has a long history of dam remediation across the country. It’s great to be able to look into our past experience and to tap some of our in-house experts to come up with solutions that meet the unique challenges that our clients face.”
The project is restricted to the working months of July to November due to weather conditions and river levels. Nicholson’s part of the work will be completed by December 2020.
