Norway TBM breakthrough race to be live streamed

Two TBMs boring the Follo Line rail tunnels are racing to breakthrough at Oslo Central Station tomorrow (Tuesday 11 September).

As part of Norway’s biggest rail project, the TBMs have each been boring 19.5km of tunnel between the cities of Oslo and Ski. Each tunnel has an 8.8m diameter and has been bored through rock by four double shield tunnel boring machines.

The 2.4t TBMs will each have excavated 9km in northern direction, the same length expected by two further TBMs who will set off drilling southwards shortly. When completed it will be the longest rail tunnel in the Nordic countries.

The final breakthrough for the drilling of the tunnel with separate tubes, is scheduled for spring 2019. The consortium, made up by Acciona Infrastructure and Ghella, who will also carry out the installation of the railway up to the signalling systems.
