OHL chosen to replace NY wastewater tunnel

OHL Group has been awarded the contract to replace existing outfall pipe at a wastewater treatment plant in New York, US.

The US$187M (£134M) contract will be undertaken by a JV made up of OHL USA (40%), Posillico (40%) and Seli (20%).

Replacing the existing prestressed concrete cylinder outfall pipe, the new 4328m tunnel will have a 3m inner diameter tunnel, and be excavated and concurrently lined using precast concrete segment rings.

The JV has chosen a slurry tunnel boring machine and will use 1.2m wide precast segment liners.

In addition, the JV will also complete ancillary work within the tunnel including the installation of new piping and valving, associated plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and electrical work.

When completed the new tunnel will connect the Bergen Point wastewater treatment plant to the Barrier Island under the Great South Bay.

The scheme is the largest construction project in Suffolk County for several decades and OHL’s first project in Long Island area of New York.
