Orascom wins £212M Cairo metro tunnel deal

Orascom Construction has announced that it has won two contracts on the third phase of Egypt’s Cairo Metro Line 3 which are valued at £212M.

The new contracts are in addition to the £83M worth of work already won by the company and will see the contractor undertake !8km of tunnelling and viaduct construction on the project, as well as underground station construction.

Construction of Cairo Metro Line 3 started in 2006 with the first section opening in 2012. Construction on phase three started in 2012 and the full system is scheduled to open in 2019.

Tunnel for the project are being constructed using tunnel boring machines, while the stations are being built using cut and cover techniques.
