Settlement threatens Oregon bridge work

Significant settlement of a US$12M (£9M) bridge under construction in Oregon, US could result in the bridge being demolished and rebuilt.

Engineers halted work on the Wickiup junction overbridge on the US97 in May this year after unexpected settlement on the access ramps.

Oregon Department of Transport has been working with geotechnical specialist Cornforth Consultants to carry out further testing before a decision is made on whether to rebuild the structure in late October.

Initial ground investigation results have suggested that the settlement may be due to the rapid consolidation diatoms within the underlying clay, which were not identified during the ground investigations for the design work.
