Severn Trent Water awards three tunnelling contracts to Barhale alliance

Barhale and North Midland Construction have been awarded three tunnelling contracts by Severn Trent Water (STW) under its AMP 6 funding period.

The projects in the Elan Valley System will be delivered by the two companies under the BNM Alliance which was formed to work for STW in AMP 6.

The alliance will use a Herrenknecht earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (TBM) to drive the tunnels through rock with strengths of up to 190MPa and 10bar of external water pressure.

The contract forms part of STW’s overall Strategic Resilience Plan to secure Birmingham’s water supply for the next century.

Work will start on site in October with the TBM expected to arrive early next year. STW’s Strategic Grid Team, working closely with feasibility consultants Atkins and Arup, tendered the projects in record-breaking time to ensure that the first is delivered by March 2017.
