Sheet Piling UK starts work at Blackburn cinema

Sheet Piling UK has started steel sheet piling installation works for a £10M cinema complex in Blackburn, Lancashire.

Sheet Piling (UK) was appointed by Barnfield Construction for the design, supply and installation of 140m of sheet piles to form a permanent sheet pile basement providing both lateral earth retention and axial loading resistance.

Due to the nature of the stiff to very stiff glacial clays prevailing ground conditions, the pile line was pre-augered in advance. The pre-augering also identified numerous manmade obstructions resulting from the previous site use.

Emirates Steel EZ24-700 sheet piles ranging in lengths from 6m to 9m were then installed using Sheet Piling UK’s ABI TM12/15H Long Reach Telescopic Leader Rig. They were then driven to final pile toe level using a BSP357 hydraulic impact hammer by one of Sheet Piling’s inhouse fleet of Sennebogen Telescopic Crawler Cranes.

Once the basement has been excavated to formation level, sheet pile interlocks are welded. The work is due to be finished by the end of this month.

The new cinema complex will have underground parking and leisure facilities and is expected to be completed by November 2019, and opening Easter 2020.

The £6.5M scheme is a single storey eight-screen cinema incorporating a bar, food and drink outlets as well as a £3.5M underground car park and public realm outdoor space.
