Skanska has announced that the Swedish transport administration Trafikverket has appointed the company to construct the southern connection of the Stockholm bypass tunnel, Förbifart Stockholm.
Work on the 350m dual carriageway rock tunnel for the E4 highway, along with a new interchange, will start on site in spring next year.
The project is part of a larger scheme being promoted by Trafikverket that will link the southern and northern parts of Stockholm with just over 18km of the 21km route in tunnels.
The southern connector tunnel to be built by Skanska is due for completion in 2021 but the whole route is not scheduled to open until 2035 when Trafikverket has said it will be one of the longest road tunnels in the world.
Tender documents for five other tunnel contracts on the project have also been released by Trafikverket but have not yet been awarded.
