Spanish high speed rail tunnel contract awarded

Contractor Isolux Corsán has been awarded a contract for the construction of tunnels on the Vitoria-Bilbao-San Sebastian high speed rail link in Spain.

Under the €79M (£56M) deal, Isolux will excavate four tunnels on the 5km route on the Bergara-Mondragón, Angiozar section in the province of Guipuzcoa.

Each of the tunnels - Kortazar, North and South, and Udalitz, East and West – are all around 2km in length. The contact also includes construction of a 1.75km long rail embankment and viaduct to link the tunnels.

Work on the scheme for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport is expected to take three and a half years to complete.
