Tunnel breakthrough for Riyadh Metro’s Line 3

Salini Impregilo has achieved a tunnelling breakthrough for Line 3 of the Riyadh Metro project in Saudi Arabia.

The tunnel boring machine (TBM) – named Jazlah – has now entered the second underground station (3F1), having excavated a tract measuring approximately 1,200m.

Since excavation started in June, tunnelling work has progressed at a peak of 27m per day.

The TBM, which measures 10m in diameter and weighs approximately 700t, will now continue its journey to complete the 5.8km tunnel for Line 3.

Measuring 41km, Line 3 will be the longest route on the metro network. The line runs from the west (near the Jeddah Expressway), ending in the east (near the National Guard Camp of Khashm El Aam), connecting a total of 22 built stations.

Line 3 is one of the six lines of the Riyadh Metro project, which is being built for Arriyadh Development Authority, the executive arm of The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh.
