Tunnelling to begin on LA Metro’s Purple Line extension

The first phase of LA’s Metro’s Purple Line 14km extension project will begin tunnelling later this year.

Two tunnel boring machines, named Elsie and Soyeon, will begin by digging parallel tunnels underneath Wilshire Boulevard between Koreatown and Beverly Hills to connect three new stations and 6.3km of new rail.

Advancing about 18m per day at depths of 15m to 21m deep, it will take around two years to bore both tunnels.

When completed in 2023, the $8.2bn (£5.8bn) project will include seven new stations.
