Van Oord gears up for foundation work on future wind farms

Van Oord has announced a major upgrade of one of its offshore installation vessels in preparation to handle the latest generation of foundations and turbines for offshore wind projects.

The Aeolus has been fitted with a 1,600t crane that was designed and built by Huisman and installed by Heerema’s Thialf.

The leg encircling crane is built around the portside aft jack-up leg and the boom is stored around the forward leg, saving valuable deck space. The new crane can lift almost twice as much as the Aeolus’ previous crane.

The modification of the vessel increases loading capacity, laydown space for foundation elements and adds a helicopter deck.

The Aeolus will be fit for duty as from spring 2018.
