Video: The world's longest and deepest undersea road tunnel

fugro norway

A video has been released showing what the world’s longest road tunnel wil look like when it is completed.

Construction has started on the E39 Coastal Highway -  a 1100km stretch from Kristiansand in the south to Trondheim in central Norway, and currently includes seven ferry crossings with a total travel time of 21 hours. The new coastal highway will be almost 50km shorter and will cut the current journey time in half.

The first phase of the scheme will be the 26.7km Rogfast sub-sea road tunnel underneath Boknafjorden. At a maximum depth of 392m below the sea level, the 10.5m diameter twin tunnels will carry two lanes of traffic, with emergency exits every 250m connecting to the other tunnel, and an emergency layby every 500m.

In December last year Fugro was awarded a £67.7M contract to carry out the seabed investigations.
