Vienna tenders metro tunnelling contracts

u2 station rathaus gr

Vienna public transport operator Wiener Linien has launched the tender process for three packages of tunnelling work to extend the U2 and U5 subways.

According to the tender documents published in the Official Journal of the European Union, the work on each of the projects is expected to take between five and seven years to complete.

The work has been split into three lots – the Rathaus station on the U2, the U5/U2 interchange station at Frankhplatz and the U2 from TVM-Vortriebe station through Matzleinsdorfer Platz, Reinprechtsdorfer Straße and Pilgramgasse to Neubaugasse.

According to Wiener Linien, the new U2/U5 intersection will close a major gap in the inner-city underground network while the extension of the U2 southwards, which is due to open in 2023, will create a new line crossing Vienna from north to south, but also key underground intersections and another connection to suburban trains.

Bids for the work at Rathaus and Frankhplatz must be submitted by 10 April but bids for the TVM-Vortriebe to Neubaugasse section must be submitted by 4 April.
