Volker wins Devonport fuelling jetty contract

The Ministry of Defence’s Defence Infrastructure Organisation has appointed Volker Stevin to construct a new jetty for Thanckes Oil Fuel Depot to provide facilities for the Royal Navy at its Devonport Naval Base.

Dredging work for the new structure is set to start in January and the main piling work will begin in September to minimise the impact on aquatic wildlife.

The jetty is located in an area of Special Area of Conservation on the River Tamar and the project has to comply with stringent environmental regulations.

“This is a key milestone in the Navy Oil Fuel Depot upgrade programme,” said Defence Infrastructure Organisationproject manager Bill Hughes. “There have been considerable environmental challenges and constraints that have been successfully navigated through the excellent efforts of the project team.”

The £43M jetty is expected to enter service in November 2019.
