On film: TBM moves into position for Crossrail’s final Limmo Peninsula tunnel drive

Travelling between Stepney Green and Limmo Peninsula may take a matter of minutes once Crossrail is completed in 2017 but the above ground journey to transfer one of the tunnel boring machines (TBM) has taken somewhat longer.

The TBM, named Jessica, completed a 2.km drive from Pudding Mill Lane to Stepney Green two months ago but it has taken a month to transfer the machine 5km to its next launch site at the Limmo Peninsula.

The final stage was completed last weekend with transfer of the 7.1m diameter cutterhead and 65t shield following several months of planning for the operation with the police and local authorities. Watch the video to find out how Jessica completed her journey.
