Polymer stabilisation helps Ipswich stretch resources

Ipswich Borough Council’s recent use of a polymer ground stabilisation technique on its concrete road network has helped it to almost double the area treated for the same costs, while minimising disruption for road users.

“We have a large network of concrete roads in the borough and many of these are deteriorating due to joint problems and underlying soft ground causing differential settlement,” said Ipswich Borough Council contracts engineer John Craddock. “These are key routes in the area so full depth reconstruction was not really an option because of the disruption.”

Craddock used Uretek to inject polymer materials below the slabs to resolve differential settlement and prevent further movement and the road surfaces were restored either using joint repairs or by overlaying with a polymer modified SMA asphalt.

“Using conventional techniques, the funds available would have enabled us to treat 4700m2 in this phase, but the approach offered by Uretek was more cost effective and enabled us to treat 8000m2 in this phase,” said Craddock.

Work on a second phase is about to start soon and Craddock hopes to repeat the success of the first phase with use of the same approach.
