Piling work for a new retail development in Prestatyn is progressing well said foundation contractor Keller.
Keller, working for main contractor Marshall Construction, is using two Soilmec SF50 rigs to install over 2400 350mm diameter continuous flight auger (CFA) piles to depths of 19m for the new development, which will include a Tesco store.
Early load testing at the site by Keller proved the capacity of the underlying peat, alluvial clay and boulder clay and enabled the pile lengths to be reduced. The site is covered with a 6m thick layer of made ground.
The high number of piles being installed for the 1.76ha development is due to the use of suspended floor slabs. Keller is constructing 900mm diameter float-finished pile heads on the floor slab piles to tight tolerances.
Work on the £1.1M piling contract started in mid-November and is on track to be completed in February. Building work on the overall £20M scheme is expected to be completed in early 2013.
