Red Cross called in to rescue Isle of Wight landslip residents

Volunteers from the Red Cross have been called in to help evacuate residents affected by a landslip in Ventnor, Isle of Wight.

The Red Cross helped to pack possessions from people’s homes after the ground instability started to affect properties after the coastal road collapsed earlier in the week.

The Undercliff area at Ventnor near Niton was in the process of undergoing work to stabilise the area by Isle of Wight Council PFI road maintenance contractor Island Roads. The £1M package of work was originally planned for 2015 but was fast tracked to start in November last year after ground movements in the area increased.

The package of work was originally planned to be finished in April this year but it is understood that the work is now suspended and the council is considering abandoning the road route through this area.
