Southampton port contracts awarded

Preparation and management of a new ground investigation is set to be Mott MacDonald’s first task following its appointment as design engineer by Volker Steven for the Southampton container terminal upgrade.

The project involves deepening of berths 201 and 202, which were the UK’s first dedicated container terminals, by up to 6m and strengthening of the quays to support higher capacity gantry cranes.

Under the agreement, Mott MacDonald will undertake detailed design and specification of all civil works for the main quay, paving and drainage, as well as the initial ground investigation.

Design work is due to be completed by the end of 2012, with construction scheduled to finish a year later at the end of 2013.
