Cooling Prize Paper: Fatigue life calculation of monopiles for offshore wind turbines using a kinematic hardening soil model

W J A P Beuckelaers, University of Oxford. This paper was first published in GE’s June 2015 edition.

ABSTRACT

A better assessment of the fatigue life for offshore wind turbines requires more realistic foundation response models, particularly incorporating a better representation of damping. This paper provides a description of how a kinematic hardening model can be applied to the current design method for wind turbine monopiles, installed in sand, to provide improved predictions of the amplitudedependent material damping derived from the pilesoil response. The proposed method forms a suitable engineering tool for fatigue life calculation of offshore wind turbines.

  • 1. Misprint in title of Beuckelaers Cooling prize paper on web - should be monopiles not monopoles

    2. Database claims to have every paper since 1968, but search for older papers by author does not work, e.g. try search for "Jewell" - fails to find papers published 1989
