Technical paper: A knowledge-based system for selecting excavation groundwater control methods

Introduction

The selection of a groundwater control method for an excavation should be based on a variety of parameters, not just soil particle size. The GroundExpert intelligent knowledgebased system enables a number of relevant parameters for a construction site to be considered against a database of knowledge for 27 methods of controlling groundwater, including both pumping and exclusion methods. For a particular site, each method is not just selected as suitable or not, but will have a rank value attached to it in the output. The rankings are derived from assessing 13 influencing parameters for each method. System output also gives explanations of parameter rankings, together with access to a database of background information on groundwater control methods. The system runs in the user-friendly environment of HyperCard on an Apple Macintosh computer.
