Technical paper: Building on soft clay at Grangemouth

By W G Cantlay, Oscar Faber and Partners

This paper was first published in GE’s March 1970 issue

Introduction

Among the major construction work currently being undertaken for BP Chevron, at Grangemouth, Scotland, is a recently completed control and switchgear building, the foundations of which posed interesting problems. The main contractor was The Lummus Co, and the building contractor was Duncan Logan (Construction), who appointed Wilson Hamilton & Wilson as consulting architects and Oscar Faber & Partners as consulting engineers for the design of the foundation and structure.
