Technical paper: Choosing the right pile/1

Robert J Curtis, CEng, MICE. This paper was first published in GE’s March 1971 edition.

Faced with an ever increasing array of specialist piling systems, each continually widening their capabilities with the rapid developments in piling plant and material, it is no wonder that the client authority or consulting engineer is confused to the extent often revealed in his inquiry documents, or habitually proceeds on the basis of “the devil you know.”

But, in order for all parties to benefit from this versatility, the ability to choose correctly must be developed and adapted at the same pace as the systems themselves.
