Technical paper: Design of large diameter bored piles

SJ Wright, CEng, BSc, MS, MICE, AMASCE and LC Reese, BS,MS, PhD, FASCE. This paper was first published in GE’s November 1979 edition.

This paper presents the results of 16 fully instrumented axial load tests on lasge diameter bored piles, constructed in Texas and Puerto Rico. The work was performed as part of a research programme at the University of Texas at Austin.

The results are combined with previous work done by Reese (1977), Whitaker & Cooke (1966) and others in order to evaluate a rational design procedure. Design charts for both ultimate-load and settlement-limit-state design, in cohesionless and cohesive soils, are presented. A method by which the load-settlement curve of the bored pile can be constructed is also suggested.

The reliability and probability of failure of the foundation is discussed in terms of limit-state concepts.
