This paper presents the results of 16 fully instrumented axial load tests on lasge diameter bored piles, constructed in Texas and Puerto Rico. The work was performed as part of a research programme at the University of Texas at Austin.
The results are combined with previous work done by Reese (1977), Whitaker & Cooke (1966) and others in order to evaluate a rational design procedure. Design charts for both ultimate-load and settlement-limit-state design, in cohesionless and cohesive soils, are presented. A method by which the load-settlement curve of the bored pile can be constructed is also suggested.
The reliability and probability of failure of the foundation is discussed in terms of limit-state concepts.
