Technical paper: Failure planes adjacent to pile shafts

Ting Wen Hui, BE, MSc, PhD, FICE. This paper was first published in GE’s July 1979 edition.

The author in a previous Paper (1977) showed how the value of K (the lateral earth pressure coefficient for shaft friction) may be estimated theoretically for both soft and stiff clays.

Parry & Swain (1977), writing in the same issue of this journal, have presented a method for the calculation of skin friction for soft clays in which they developed an expression that in effect leads to an identical expression for K for soft clay as this author’s. They have in addition suggested the possibility of a link between the effective stress and total stress approach.
