By A D M Penman

This paper was first published in GE’s May 1983 issue

Synopsis

The popularity of the embankement type of dam is increasing because it is more tolerant of poor foundations than other types of dam and in general they are cheaper to build.

This paper, which is based on a lecture delivered at a meeting of the British Geotechnical Society on 20 January 1982, looks at the latest geotechnical developments relating to embankment dams
