Technical paper: Monitoring of pile construction in the Arabian Gulf

AN Peronius, MPhil, FIHT, FGS & PS Kristensen, BSc(Hons). This paper was first published in GE’s July 1987 edition.

The construction of the Saudi Arabia-Bahrain Causeway involved the placing of 498 large diameter precast piles.

This Paper describes briefly a preconstruction site investigation in the argillaceous rocks and shows how a simple drill index was used to monitor the placing of the piles.

lt is concluded that the technique developed on site was a useful method to confirm that the piles were placed in strata as anticipated in the design.
