Technical paper: Steel 'H' bearing piles driven into Mercia Mudstone

E Jeffers, LG Mouchel & Ptns. This paper was first published in GE’s June 1995 edition.

There is limited information available to facilitate the design of ‘H’ bearing piles driven into Mercia Mudstone (Keuper Marl). This paper reports the installation of 1400 piles for four bridges on the Newark Relief Road opened in 1990. Load/displacement graphs for 23 trial piles are given. Some were subjected to redriving after a ‘wait period’. An additional borehole was sunk adjacent to each trial pile. 22 of the works piles were tested.
