Internal forces and horizontal displacements of the support system of excavations subjected to asymmetric thrust (due to nearby foundations and water pressures) are examined. The analysis of the support system as a frame with the soil replaced by springs shows that bending moments can be higher in the wall opposite to the higher thrust and that this wall may be forced against the retained ground. Field measurements which support this last point are presented
