Technical paper: Two aspects of the use of the moisture condition apparatus

CRI Clayton, BSc(Hons), MSc, DIC, PhD, CEng, MICE, FGS. This paper was first published in GE’s May 1979 edition.

Introduction

In two recent publications by Parsons (1977) and Ingoldby and Parsons (1977), the Transport and Road Research Laboratory has proposed the use of a single apparatus to classify the suitability of granular and cohesive soils, as well as chalk, for use as common embankment fill. This Paper presents the preliminary findings on two of the uses of the apparatus — for determining the suitability of clay as fill, and for classifying chalk.
