Technical paper: Wick drains employed on Malton By-pass

By M G Beyer, Soil Mechanics and J S Falconer, North Yorkshire County Council

This paper was first published in GE’s January 1978 issue.

Introduction

The Malton By-pass in North Yorkshire, currently under construction by Dowsett Engineering Construction of Harrogate, has recently been the scene for the introduction of the AV-Colbond wick drain to the UK by Soil Mechanics, the geotechnical specialists of the John Mowlem Group. The purpose of the new type of vertical drainage system, for which this contract was the first not only in the UK but also outside of Holland, is to accelerate the process of consolidation of soft alluvial deposits under embankment loading.
