Trial underway to speed up offshore wind farm foundation construction

Nordsee Ost wind farm developer RWE Innogy and specialist contractor Found Ocean are working on onshore trials to investigate effective ways of speeding up offshore foundation installation processes.

The 48 turbine Nordsee Ost scheme, which is being constructed off the German north coast, is being used as a trial site for the new techniques.

The Clean Energy Pipeline European offshore wind 2013 – realising the opportunity report published last month identified the construction of foundations for offshore wind farm foundation as one of the key areas that needed to be improve in terms of efficiency in order to meet European wind energy targets.

According to Found Ocean, one of the techniques being trialled at Nordsee Ost involves speeding up grouting operations by using a subsea connector that will allow the grout material to be delivered directly to the annulus on the jacket foundation.
